Cut to Andie’s room. Her and Pacey are lying on the bed, facing the television. On the screen, ‘Benny & Joon’ is playing.
Sam, played by Johnny Depp, is attempting to place his hat on his head. It flies off. He stares at it, and then attempts to place it on Joon’s head.
It does the same, causing her to laugh.
Andie smiles.
ANDIE: I love this move!
Pacey gives her a look.
PACEY: God, why?
ANDIE: Come on…aren’t they just the cutest?
PACEY: Maybe. If you got for the whole loveable misfit thing.
Andie smiles at him.
ANDIE: It’s not that, Pacey. I guess I can sort of relate to Joon in a way.
PACEY: How?
ANDIE: Well, everyone thinks she’s crazy, right. But Sam, he can see past that. That there’s really just a lonely person behind all the eccentricities. Plus, there’s the whole overprotective brother thing.
Pacey scoffs.
PACEY: I’ve been known to go to great lengths to impress a girl, but Sam here goes a bit too far.
Andie rolls her eyes.
ANDIE: You’re missing the point, Pacey.
PACEY: And what exactly would that point be?
ANDIE: That love isn’t necessarily limited to those who are well suited for it, or even understand it. There’s somebody out there for everyone.
PACEY: Well, personally I prefer ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. Now there’s a Johnny Depp movie I can relate to.
Andie smirks.
ANDIE: (with accent) Well, shiver me timbers!
PACEY: Yeah, I’ve always had this pirate fixation. There was this huge rainstorm back in high school, and we had to pick clothes out of this box. I got this frilly shirt and bandana, so this girl told me I looked like a pirate. Ever since, it stuck.
ANDIE: So that’s what you see yourself as? A pirate?
PACEY: Of course. Searching for buried treasure and rescuing damsels in distress…that’s the life for me, McPhee! A living fairytale.
ANDIE: Ah, but remember? Jeremiah Chechik envisioned this movie as a kind of ‘Fairy Tale’, too. That’s why they did all the odd lighting.
They pause.
PACEY: If you’re trying to get me to like this, it’s not gonna work.
Andie giggles.
ANDIE: Don’t be so sure, Witter! I can be very persuasive.
She looks back at the screen. Pacey’s eyes linger on her for a moment.
PACEY: (muttering) Of that I have no doubt.
